In August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina showed the world just what happens when Mother Nature is pitted against years of poor engineering. Extreme storm surge caused the New Orleans Levee System to fail, leaving the city inundated for miles, and causing 125 Billion US dollars in damage. The imagery of a flooded metropolis was a kind that those around the world wished to never see again. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans, and, in August of 2017, she rang for round 2 in the ring, bringing down the worst inland flooding event caused by a tropical cyclone.
Beginning as a tropical wave off the coast of Africa and crossing the Atlantic, Harvey was nothing more than a tropical storm that struck the windward islands before weakening into a tropical wave in the Caribbean Sea. But once it made it into the Gulf of Mexico, Harvey rapidly intensified into one of the strongest hurricanes to strike the Texas coastline in recent memory. Thanks to a complex meteorological setup, it stalled over the state of Texas, bringing over 60 inches of rain in less than a week, submerging major highways, businesses, and neighborhoods. Today we will take a deep dive into Hurricane Harvey, covering its origins, meteorological synopsis, impact, response (and associated controversies), and the status of the impacted communities today. Welcome to Nature's Fury.
