About this video
Tom Petty gave Stevie Nicks her biggest solo hit, Stop Dragginâ My Heart Around. But just a few years later, he took a song back. When Stevie inspired the song Donât Come Around Here No More, Tom laid down the vocals, kept it for himself, and turned it into one of his biggest hits of the 1980s.
FULL STORY HERE:
In the latest issue of Classic Rock, itâs revealed that Nicks actually originally wanted no part of the collaboration, on the basis that she wanted all the material on the album to be her own. In fact, Nicks stormed out the studio when producer/boyfriend Jimmy Iovine proposed the idea of recording the duet with Petty, but thankfully she had a change of heart. Revealing the moment she returned into the studio to agree to the definitive collaboration, she admits, âOkay, youâre absolutely right. Iâm sorry for being so bitchy about this, itâs just that Iâm so protective of my songs.â"
As it turns out, Nicks didnât need Petty in the studio with her after all. With the help of the two musiciansâ mutual producer, Jimmy Iovine, Nicks re-recorded the track as a duet with Petty without the Heartbreakers frontman even knowing it. Petty had already recorded vocals on a rough demo of the track when Jimmy Iovine brought the song to Nicks. The âDreamsâ singer recorded her vocals over the take on an empty track, transforming the grooving rock number into a duet. Brian Hart, who worked with Iovine and colleague Shelly Yakus, called the pseudo-duet âboth funny and horrible, but I didnât say anything because I didnât want to lose my jobâ
Tom Petty initially wasn't too thrilled about the duet either, as he had plans to re-cut the track, rather than keeping the original. He said, "He [Iovine] plays me Stop Dragginâ My Heart Around, the same track, with her singing. I go: âJimmy, you just took the song?...His comeback was, like: âThis is gonna buy you a house.â"
"But it pissed me off because it came out at the same time as our single [A Woman In Love], and I think ours suffered.â Regret set in before the albums even hit store shelves, Petty confirmed in Conversations. He said he felt "depressed" about the trade as the band completed "Insider," despite the fact that he wrote the song with Nicks in mind. Despite his initial annoyance, Petty later admitted the song worked better as a duet than his original version, recognizing the undeniable chemistry between his and Nicks' voices."
Don't Come Around Here....
Dave Stewart wrote âDonât Come Around Here No Moreâ for Nicksâ third solo album Rock a Little.
âDave Stewart actually wrote that for me and sent to me the track with one line âDonât Come Around Here No More,â said Nicks. âWe all went in the studio with me and David and Tom Petty and the next day I came in and Tom had done a vocal on it. And because I was extremely selfish and spoiled rotten, I got very angry and fired everybody and stormed out. I told Tom to keep the song, and I lost the song."
