In this video we take a look at the screen reader built into Windows, Narrator. In Windows Narrator has become really great, and people who are blind or visually impaired will find it can work well to help them carry out many of the most important tasks on the computer.

This is part one of our series on using Narrator with Microsoft Word, where we cover the basics of opening Word, typing and then navigating around and listening back to what we have typed. We cover a few basic keyboard commands here which are useful across many different applications:

Control+Windows+Enter - Turns on Narrator
Control+Home - Moves to the start of the document
Control+End - Moves to the end of the document
Home - Moves to the start of the line
End - Moves to the end of the line
Caps Lock+Down Arrow - Reads from the cursor to the end of the document
Up and down arrows - Move up and down lines and reads them
Left and right arrows - moves letter by letter
Control+Left and right arrows - Moves word by word
