How To Record - The Bodhrán (Irish Traditional Drum)

A short introductory guide to recording, and specifically, recording your Bodhrán. The Bodhrán is a traditional Irish frame drum played by striking the skin with either a stick/tipper or your hand. Usually ranging between 12" & 18" in diameter, it is most commonly fitted with a natural goat skin. Other skin types are Deer, Calf and Kangaroo.

There are various styles of bodhrán playing, most commonly known as (and misinterpreted as) North Kerry or Double Ended style. My own style is rather unique to me with a specific grip developed from more traditional means of percussion playing, and an approach a kin to a more modern take on an older style.

I'm at my happiest when working in the studio, and I'm very fortunate to have my own 'Firgrove Studios' here in Enniskillen, Co.Fermanagh. A specific drum/percussion recording studio available for all means of tracking, mixing and producing, with full HD/4K video capabilities. I carry a wide range of microphones and percussive equipment, with the Bodhrán being my speciality instrument. I have worked and recorded in world famous studios including Abbey Road 1 & 2 (made famous by The Beatles) Air Lyndhurst, and Windmill Lane Studios. I am a credited soloist on multiple film scores including John Powell's How To Train Your Dragon 2, & How To Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World film scores, as well as Thomas Newman's Victoria & Abdul.
