If you want to safely move all of your Google Photos and videos to an external hard drive like this one right here, here’s exactly how to do it — and if you’d rather store them on your computer instead, the process is almost the same.

Start by opening your Google Account. Click your profile picture, then click Manage your Google Account. On the left, click Data and privacy, then scroll down until you see Download your data and click it.

You’ll be on Google Takeout. Click Deselect all, then scroll until you find Google Photos. Select it, and if you want to pick certain albums, you can do that here — otherwise, just keep all selected.

Once it’s ready, Google will email you a link. Click it and download the files to your computer first — don’t try saving directly to the hard drive. When the download’s done, open the folder and extract the zip file.

You’ll also see files ending in .json. Those aren’t photos — they’re metadata. To delete them, click in the search bar, type json, select all, and delete. This will clean up your hard drive so it only contains your actual media files.

If you notice a “failed videos” folder, that just means some videos didn’t fully download. To fix that, copy the filename, go to photos.google.com, paste it into the search bar, and download it manually. Once that’s done, move it over to your “Google Photos” folder on your hard drive.

And if you want an extra backup, just keep a copy on your computer too — that way you’ve got both a local and external version in case one ever fails.
