Hi, I'm Dr Shawna D’dharan and an associate dentist of Elite Dental Group.
Today we'll be talking about crowns and "how long the dental crowns actually last".
A well-made and well-fitting dental crown can last many years, provided that it's well maintained by the patient. Good hygiene practices such as brushing your teeth and flossing your teeth, that includes the crown, is very very important.
Visiting your dentist for your six monthly active maintenance appointment is equally important because your dentist will help you clean those hard to reach areas.
As well as taking periodic x-rays every two years to make sure that the crown is still fitting well onto your tooth and there are no new decays forming around it.
Remember, crowns can become damaged due to poor hygiene as the tooth beneath the crowns get decayed. The surface of the crown can get damaged as well by repeated wear and tear, and this type of wear is accelerated in patients who clench or grind your teeth.
To prevent the premature damage due to excessive cleansing or grinding, your dentist may advise you to wear a mouth-guard at night to sleep. This mouth-guard won't only protect your teeth from getting damaged, it will also protect all the dental work that has been done.

What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is cemented onto existing teeth or implants. Crowns can be used to strengthen and protect a damaged or cracked tooth, and/or after a tooth has had root canal treatment done, and/or improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function.
When do you need a dental crown?
To protect a weak, cracked or damaged tooth from further breakage
To restore a severely worn or cracked tooth
To reinforce a tooth with a large filling
To reinforce a tooth that has had root canal treatment
To cover poorly shaped or severely discolored teeth
To hold a dental bridge in place
To cover a dental implant
What are dental crowns made of?
The most popular type of dental crown in the market today is Zirconia. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, other types of porcelain (lithium disilicate) or resin-ceramic hybrids. Porcelain can also be combined with zirconia or metal bases.
