How America Gained Independence 🇺🇸

After the war with France in 1763, Britain gained a lot of land but was left with heavy debt. To recover money, King George III put new taxes on the American colonies, including ones on tea, sugar, and printed documents. Anger over these taxes led to fighting in Lexington in 1775, starting the American War for Independence. In 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and the United States was born. Although Britain won some early battles, George Washington’s army achieved important victories at Trenton and Saratoga, leading France and Spain to join the war. The conflict ended in 1781 with the British surrender at Yorktown and was made official by the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which recognized the United States as an independent country.
