Houston stunned TCU with a 30-19 victory at Amon G. Carter Stadium on Saturday night, securing the Cougarsโ first win over the Horned Frogs since 1992.
The Cougars, struggling offensively in their previous two games, turned to sophomore quarterback Zeon Chriss to jump-start their attack. Chriss delivered, completing 10 of 11 passes for 112 yards in the first quarter alone, helping Houston build an early 14-0 lead. TCU found themselves in a deep hole just minutes into the second quarter.
The Horned Frogsโ first half was plagued by turnovers, with three stalling any offensive momentum. However, they found some rhythm in the second half. TCUโs Jeremy Payne punched in a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, and a 29-yard touchdown reception from Jack Bech in the fourth quarter brought them within striking distance.
Down by eight points late in the game, TCUโs defense faltered, allowing Houston to run down the clock and extend their lead with a field goal. The Horned Frogs had a final chance to rally with 1:58 remaining, but a costly fumble sealed the game.
Chriss was the standout for Houston, finishing 15 of 18 for 141 yards and a touchdown, while adding 97 yards on the ground.
With the loss, TCU heads into a much-needed bye week before facing their first ranked opponent of the season, Utah, on October 19.
