Soviet Treatment of German POWs After WWII 🇩🇪

German prisoners of war (POWs) on the Eastern Front during World War II faced brutal conditions, marked by extreme deprivation, forced labor, and mistreatment. After key defeats like the Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943), large numbers of German soldiers were captured by the Soviet Red Army. Soviet authorities often viewed these POWs as enemies of the state and subjected them to harsh conditions. Many were forced to march long distances to POW camps, where they faced overcrowding, inadequate food, and a lack of medical care. The death rate among German POWs was staggeringly high, with tens of thousands perishing from starvation, disease, or mistreatment. The Soviet Union, after the war, also employed former German POWs in rebuilding efforts or sent them to labor camps in Siberia.
