On This Day in History: IBM Invents the First Digital Hologram in 1967 🎥

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1967, IBM discovered a new technique for creating the first holograms using digital computers.

At the IBM Scientific Center in Houston, Texas, a team of IBM researchers successfully programmed the IBM System/360 Model 50 computer to calculate the interference patterns that light waves could produce if reflected from a real object.

This new method enabled the computer to generate holograms using mathematical descriptions of the object rather than requiring the real object or actual light waves for holographic production.

The creation of holograms numerically by a computer opened the possibility of obtaining 3D pictures of objects that exist only in concept, rather than in physical reality, and this discovery greatly extended the usefulness of holography in engineering and scientific applications.
