In this video we take a brief look at the historical evolution of cryptography and cryptanalysis, up to the point where Side Channel Analysis became a well-established means of breaking modern algorithms.

Cryptography is the study of secure communication in the presence of adversaries, and has been constantly evolving since ancient times. Around the 20th century, the theoretical foundation on which modern, theoretically secure algorithms rely was laid. But the landscape changed again in the 21st century, when researchers observed that the implementation of cryptographic algorithms can be vulnerable to physical attacks. This gave rise to Side Channel Analysis, a technique which exploits the information leakage of cryptographic devices.
