Only foreigners and tourists are allowed to eat alcohol in Benghazi and throughout Libya according to Islamic law. There are many mosques for Muslims in Benghazi. Great mosques like Atiq and Usman are also adornment of this city. There is also a church in the city for the Christian community. Before 1948, many Jews lived in different cities of the country. Libya's oldest university is the Libyan University.
The same university campus was established in Benghazi in 1968. Education is provided free of charge in Benghazi as in the whole of Libya. Various primary, secondary and private schools are also established in the city. There are also foreign schools, such as the Benghazi UP School and the Benghazi British School. The park is also home to wild cats, elephants and many other species of wild animals.
In terms of climate, Benghazi is a city with a warm climate but mild winters. The average annual rainfall here is 270 mm. Water supply to the city from a small man-made river in southern Libya. Benghazi is an economic center in Libya. The city has a major port that is of great economic importance because Libya imports many other products, including foodstuffs. The city's industries include processed food textiles. Processes include salt and building materials. There is also a large cement factory in Benghazi. Wheat, dates, olives, wool and meat are the major productions here. The oil industry plays an important role in the country's economy, including Benghazi.
The tourism sector is also contributing significantly to the city's revenue as blacks from eastern Libya use the city as a base. The city's two main hotels are the Tibetan Hotel and the Ozo Hotel. Many other hotels have also been opened to cater to the needs of the city. There is a microbus system in and around the city which covers many areas of the city. The largest monument of Ottoman architecture in Benghazi is the Ottoman palace in Al-Barqa, which survived to the end of the ninth century.
