At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Eric Moussambani of Equatorial Guinea — nicknamed “Eric the Eel” — took the world’s stage in the men’s 100m freestyle and delivered one of the most unforgettable Olympic moments ever. Despite having only begun swimming about eight months earlier and never having seen an Olympic-sized (50m) pool before arriving in Sydney, he was given a wildcard entry due to Equatorial Guinea’s lack of adequate swimming facilities. In his heat, both of the other two competitors false-started and were disqualified, leaving Moussambani alone in the lane. He swam the entire 100 meters mostly with his head above water, gasping and struggling, finishing in 1 minute 52.72 seconds — the slowest time ever recorded for that event in Olympic history. Although that time was far too slow to advance, the crowd’s roar, his perseverance, and his underdog spirit won him global admiration. After the Games, he went on to improve dramatically — eventually swimming the 100m in about 52 seconds and becoming his country’s national swim coach.
