In the Grey's Anatomy season 22 episode 6 fall finale, viewers were braced for perilous situations involving two Grey Sloan doctors: Jo (Camilla Luddington), where Winston (Anthony Hill) told Link (Chris Carmack) that "her heart is failing," and Teddy (Kim Raver), who was seen beneath a crashed bus as it fell on her. Jo's devastating diagnosis of peripartum cardiomyopathy was therefore not wholly unexpected, but Grey's was able to surprise us with this startling revelation: In his final moments, Richard (James Pickens, Jr.) revealed that he had cancer. His admission ended the episode's out-of-character confrontational plot between Richard and Miranda (Chandra Wilson), who clashed over a number of issues, including resuscitating a bus crash victim who survived because Richard disobeyed Miranda's order to stop and call time of death. As it turned out, Richard had been preoccupied while awaiting the results of his biopsy.

Jo and Link have been unlucky this season on Grey's for some reason. In the autumn finale, Jo and their infants experienced a near-death experience, following Link's near-death experience following the explosion in the season premiere. Jo returned to Grey Sloan with Link at her side after probably overdoing it during the previous episode's challenging birth at 30 weeks pregnant and experienced leaking on the way home. When Jo's dyspnea was determined to be a sign of peripartum cardiomyopathy, what had initially seemed to be a regular examination with the babies looking fine rapidly became concerning. At first, Winston explained that the ailment could be managed with medication or a heart pump to give the infants more time to develop in utero, so that didn't seem frightening in and of itself.

But the medication didn't work, and Jo and her infants crashed during what should have been a standard surgery to place a pump in the operating room. Winston had to conduct his first C-section since medical school because, for whatever reason, there were no OBGYN doctors available. There's no pressure. We won't know how he did until January 7. The season opener of Grey's Anatomy, which is renowned for its dramatic cliffhangers, featured Monica (Natalie Morales), the first doctor to die this season. According to Deadline, Luddington & Pickens Jr. are both series regulars who will feature in 14 of Grey's Anatomy's 18 episodes this season. There is no hint that any of them will depart early. (They both portray popular personalities.) Showrunner Meg Marinis revealed in an interview after the Season 22 premiere that Jo and Link's baby will be born this season, indicating a live birth.
