Grand Egyptian Museum Opens After Decades of Anticipation 🏺

After two decades of huge anticipation and repeated delays, the Grand Egyptian Museum is finally ready for its grand unveiling.

Set to officially open on Saturday, the museum showcases Egypt’s ancient civilisation and anchors the government’s drive to revitalise tourism, a crucial source of foreign currency for the cash-strapped country.

Situated just outside Cairo beside the famed Giza Pyramids, the $1 billion mammoth complex is poised to become the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation, with more than 50,000 artefacts charting life in ancient Egypt.

By comparison, the Louvre in Paris displays about 35,000 pieces.

The museum is among the flagship mega-projects championed by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who, since taking office in 2014, has pursued sweeping infrastructure investments to revive an economy weakened by decades of stagnation and battered by the upheaval following the 2011 Arab Spring.
