About this video

During the making of 1964’s “Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster”, the most controversial behind the scenes decision was to gradually move Godzilla away from being a villain and to have him act more like a human in order to appeal to children. This was a storytelling choice that was made by Tomoyuki Tanaka and was supported by Eiji Tsuburaya. However, the most vocal critic of this decision was director Ishiro Honda, who stated “I am concerned that we are drifting toward taking the easy route, believing a silly story line is OK, though it might be mocked by adults simply because the film is made for children. Kids will not tolerate nonsense.” Despite these qualms from Honda, “Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster” was a hit at the box office.
