About this video

In the 12th century, during the Middle Ages in Italy, the city of Bologna had constructed over 100 towers, some over 300 feet tall. This makes Bologna, one of, if not the first city to construct a an urban cityscape of skyscrapers ... but in medieval Europe, hundreds of years before its modern urban equivalent would begin construction. What started out as defensive towers, became marvels of wealth and power, symbols meant to signal the cities prosperity. Unfortunately, of the more than 100 medieval high-rise towers that once dotted the city of Bologna, only 22 remain today and one, the Garisenda tower, of the two towers is expected to collapse.
