America’s First Modern Art Museum at Sotheby's 🎨

As America’s first museum of modern art, The Phillips Collection stands as one of the world’s most distinguished showcases of Impressionist and Modern works. Founded in the early 1920s by art collectors Marjorie and Duncan Phillips, the museum occupies a Georgian Revival home in Washington, D.C., now expanded to house an extraordinary range of American and European masterpieces.

From Renoir’s beloved Luncheon of the Boating Party to the meditative Rothko Room, The Phillips Collection has always championed a bold dialogue between past and present—bridging artists across time and nationality. Visitors encounter iconic works by Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, and many more.

This November, works from The Phillips Collection will be offered at Sotheby’s New York Sales to benefit future acquisitions—continuing founder Duncan Phillips’s vision of a museum in constant evolution. From Georgia O’Keeffe’s Large Dark Red Leaves on White to Georges Seurat’s Clowns et poney and Arthur Dove’s Rose and Locust Stump, proceeds will support The Phillips Collection’s ongoing commitment to growth, renewal, and artistic discovery.
