Witnesses Recall Charlie Kirk Shooting at UVU

This story follows four people who didn’t know each other until a single moment tied them together forever. They were in the crowd at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025, when Charlie Kirk was shot in front of thousands during his campus tour. In this piece, they return to the campus with Jim Spiewak to talk plainly about what they saw, the chaos that followed, and what it’s taken to keep going since.

Jason Behunin worked his way to the front row. Christian Overton stood just off the stage with his son. Kurt Liechty, a combat veteran and former law enforcement officer, was to the right of the stage with one son while another was elsewhere on campus. Fifteen-year-old Carter Lloyd came with her mom and sister. They remember a rally-like energy just before a single “pop” at 2:23 p.m. snapped the afternoon in half. Some thought firework. Then they saw the wound. The cheering collapsed into chaos.

What came next was ducking for cover, searching for loved ones in a stampede, and the sickening dose of reality of what just happened.

They’re still sorting through what accountability should look like in a case like this and processing what happened in different ways but they all agree that fear doesn’t get to win.
