Doomsday Clock Moves Closer to Midnight ⏰

Atomic scientists moved the symbolic “Doomsday Clock” closer to midnight than ever before, warning that the world faces growing risks of catastrophe driven by nuclear tensions, wars and emerging technologies.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set the clock at 85 seconds to midnight, four seconds closer than last year, citing aggressive posturing by nuclear powers including Russia, China and the United States, the erosion of nuclear arms control, and ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Scientists also pointed to rising geopolitical tensions in the Western Hemisphere since U.S. President Donald Trump returned to office a year ago.

Additional concerns included the unchecked use of artificial intelligence in military systems, its potential role in biological threats, and its growing impact on global disinformation.

Created in 1947 amid early Cold War fears, the Doomsday Clock is meant to signal how close humanity is to self-destruction. This marks the third time in four years that the clock has been moved closer to midnight.
