Ellesmere Harbour: Winter Canal Cruising Tips 🚤

Winter cruising on the canals is a very different experience from summer. Fewer boats, shorter days, and a lot more planning involved. In this episode I cruise the Jolly Roger along the beautiful Llangollen Canal, heading for the market town of Ellesmere to stock up on supplies and prepare for the winter weather ahead.

Living on a rural canal means shops aren’t always close by, so a stop in Ellesmere is the perfect chance to refill the cupboards, top up the water tank, empty the toilet cassettes, and get ready to hunker down for a while.

While I’m here, the Jolly Roger also gets a full engine service, giving me peace of mind that everything is in good shape and ready for the next adventure.

Along the way we pass historic canal boats, explore the charming town of Ellesmere, learn a little about its connection to Thomas Telford, and enjoy the slower pace that winter brings to canal life.

Winter might mean mud, cold mornings and watching the weather a bit more closely… but it also means quieter waterways, friendly winter moorings, and time to really enjoy the places you visit.
