The 2026 FIFA World Cup is supposed to be the biggest sporting event North America has ever seen. But right now, the average fan has been completely priced out and the numbers do not lie.

In Qatar, you could grab tickets to 9 different World Cup games for $1000. That was just a few years ago. Fast forward to today and you are looking at over $10,000 to do the same thing. That is not a typo. And the result? Hotels are sitting empty, flights from Europe are way down, and FIFA itself has been quietly cancelling hotel blocks in host cities across Canada and the United States.

We went through the reports, the booking data, and what the tourism industry is actually saying. The picture is not good. Vancouver is struggling to fill hotel rooms. US host cities are reopening their FIFA reserved inventory back to regular travellers because the demand just is not there. Hotel occupancy in FIFA reserved blocks is sitting as low as 15 percent.

The fans who make the World Cup the World Cup, the ones who travel across the ocean, pack the stadiums, and create that atmosphere, they have been priced out. And without them, what exactly is this event going to be?
