Exploring the Underwater Cthulhu: A Deep Dive into 2020's Overlooked Lovecraftian Horror

About this video

"Mankind was not absolutely alone among the conscious things of earth, for shapes come out of the dark to visit the faithful few," said Lovecraft in his famous story, ''The Call of Cthulhu."
The film ''Underwater'' is loosely adapted from the story by H. P. Lovecraft, "The Call of Cthulhu," published in the Weird Tales for the first time in 1928. At first glance, "Underwater" appears to be a blend of "Leviathan," "Deep Star 6," and "Abyss," as well as a subaquatic “Alien” rip-off. It was not until the plot delved 11000 meters under the sea, in the gloomy depths of the Mariana Trench and put us face to face with a malevolent Lovecraftian creature, that we were assured of something unique in the story.
This 2020 sci-fi action horror film was penned by Brian Duffield and directed by William Eubank. The film was shot in 2017, but the release was delayed due to Disney's purchase of 20th Century Fox. The film follows a deep-sea drilling operation leading to a disaster, that crushed the thin wall separating them from excessive seawater pressure. The crew then encountered hostile creatures threatening their survival. The film features Kristen Stewart as Norah Price, the mechanical engineer of the Kepler 822; Vincent Cassel as Captain Lucien; Jessica Henwick as Emily Haversham, who was the biologist, and others. "Underwater" is a half-disaster and half-monster movie with highly efficient in-the-moment performances that make the film nerve-wracking. The film grossed $41 million worldwide with a $50 – $80 million budget. So, let us take you 11000 meters under the sea and explore the world of Kepler 822.
