About this video
On Sunday, September 28, 2025, South Metro Fire Rescue and Littleton Police responded to an electric vehicle fire in the parking lot at 100 W. Littleton Blvd.
The owner of a Nissan Leaf called 911 after their vehicle, parked at a charging station, began smoking. Crews from Engine 11 confirmed the batteries were in thermal runaway, quickly escalating into a fully involved fire.
As a precaution, multiple nearby businesses downwind of the smoke were evacuated. Following SMFR and EPA guidelines, firefighters allowed the vehicle to burn down on its own rather than applying water, which can create hazardous hydrochloric acid when used on lithium-ion batteries.
Once the fire was under control, crews deployed a specialized EV fire blanket, and the vehicle was towed to a secure lot where it remains covered.
Safety Tips for EV Owners:
Always follow manufacturer’s charging recommendations
Monitor your vehicle while it’s charging
If charging at home, install a smoke detector in your garage
Keep your vehicle up to date with all recalls
South Metro is committed to protecting lives, property, and the environment as EV technology continues to evolve.
Thanks to Littleton Police and 1st Class Towing for their assistance.
Assigned Units: Battalion Chief 2, Engine 11, Engine 15, Hazmat 38, Ladder 12, Logs 10, Medic 12, MED 2, Safety 2, PIO 12
