About this video
Enem is the second largest university admission test in the world. Before its launch, in 1998, Brazilians had to take a separate test at each university. That said, Enem made access to superior education more democratic. But, since its election, Bolsonaro has been criticizing the exam.
In 2018, the president protested against a question about the dialect of gays and transvestites, and said he would try to ‘gain some knowledge’ about the test in the following year.
In 2021, the Education Minister said the test would look very much like the government itself. 🙈🙈🙈 This happened after 37 public service employees from INEP, the institution responsible for ENEM, walked out their positions saying they were under psychological pressure and veiled surveillance.
Despite the fear, Enem 2021 was brilliant 🎆 It didn’t spark controversy, but it touched on current and relevant topics, like political passivity, erotization of the female body, racism, indigenous issues, and much more.
As usual, ENEM inspired many memes, many of them making fun of Bolsonaro’s ‘censorship’. Instead of mentioning Marx, the test mentioned Engels; instead of referring to the Brazilian dictatorship, the test mentioned the ‘Admirável Gado Novo’, a song from Zé Ramalho, which uses the word ‘cattle’ as a metaphor for people that support their oppressors blindly. It is worth mentioning that Bolsonaro’s supporters are called ‘cattle’ (gado) 😂😂😂
The truth is, INEP is a solid institution, despite all the threats from the government.
And we’re glad.
