After returning from England, Vijay Merchant fell ill and missed the 1947 - 48 Australia tour - denying him a chance to face Don Bradman.

But in 1951, he returned for one final Test in Delhi against England - and made it unforgettable with record runs before retiring.

His absence left a void in Indian cricket for nearly two decades… until new stars like Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy rose, creating a record opening partnership in 1956.
