EMERGENCY! WE WENT 15 FEET UNDER THE 17,000 GALLON REEF TANK TO FIX IT!

About this video

Ever wonder what it REALLY takes to keep one of the world’s most complex aquatic facilities running?

In this episode, the Polo Reef team tackles one of the toughest behind-the-scenes projects in the entire building: draining, scrubbing, resetting, and restoring three massive water towers that feed multiple systems across the facility. Two towers hold 2,500 gallons each, and the third holds 5,000 gallons and all three are essential for stabilizing water quality, dilution, and trace element balance on a massive scale. This episode shows just how intense, exhausting, and precision-heavy that process truly is.
But that’s just the beginning.

The team also kicks off a friendly internal competition: who can successfully quarantine the most difficult fish species? Each person is assigned a notoriously sensitive, stress-prone, or disease-susceptible fish and the race is on to get their challenger through quarantine healthy. It's fun, it’s chaotic, and it gets surprisingly educational.

We also dive into several developing system mysteries:
• Diatom growth—what new testing is revealing
• Recurring fluke issues in the koi pond and how treatments + hands-on inspections unfold
• A full deep-water system cleanup, including targeted bryopsis and hair algae removal
• A clam necropsy, examining protozoa under the microscope to uncover the cause of a sudden loss
• And yes… the baby Conspic Angelfish is back, now inching closer than ever to joining the giant reef tank!

From detective work to problem-solving to heavy-duty maintenance, this episode shows why at Polo Reef, nothing is “routine.” Every task becomes an investigation, an improvement, and sometimes a mystery waiting to be solved.

If you love real-world aquarium challenges, behind-the-scenes science, and systems that constantly evolve in real time… you’re in the right place.
