Democrats are looking at today's off-year election as a metric of whether Donald Trump's historically low approval ratings will help the party make gains in state races and set the stage for the 2018 midterms.

Both partiess have their eyes on the Virginia governor's race, where Democrat Ralph Northam still maintains a slight lead over his Republican opponent Ed Gillespie in a state that Hillary Clinton won by five points in November.
