फर्टिलाइजेशन से लेकर डिलीवरी तक प्रेग्‍नेंसी के दौरान कई तरह के शारीरिक बदलाव आते हैं। जब फर्टिलाइज एग खुद गर्भाशय से जाकर जुड़ जाता है, तब प्रेग्‍नेंसी शुरू होती है। एक्‍टोपिक प्रेग्‍नेंसी में फर्टिलाइज एग गर्भाशय से नहीं जुड़ता है बल्कि वह फैलोपियन ट्यूब, एब्‍डोमिनल कैविटी या गर्भाशय ग्रीवा से जाकर जुड़ जाता है। इसे अस्‍थानिक गर्भावस्‍था भी कहा जाता है।
