About this video
Ever wondered how to get that cinematic half-above, half-underwater shot without diving gear or expensive underwater housings? Here’s how we pulled it off, safely and creatively, using some clever tools and a bit of DIY spirit.
1️⃣ Get a large glass aquarium
Big enough to fully fit your camera and lens at the desired angle. Place it at the water’s edge (pool, lake, or tank). Make sure it’s level and stable, you want smooth water contact across the glass.
2️⃣ Mount your camera
We used a Cooke Mini S4/i Cine Prime 18mm, the wide field of view perfectly captures both worlds: below and above the surface.
3️⃣ Eliminate reflections
A Bright Tangerine Misfit Atom Matte Box pressed gently against the aquarium glass removes unwanted reflections and glare, keeping your image crystal clear.
4️⃣ Manual focus control
Because autofocus will struggle through glass and water, a Tilta Nucleus M Wireless Follow Focus (Mono Set) lets you pull focus manually with precision.
5️⃣ Frame your shot
Lower the camera so the glass waterline splits the frame, half above, half below. Adjust until you get that dreamy split-perspective.
6️⃣ Light & shoot
Mind your exposure, underwater areas will appear darker. Soft, even light helps keep both sides balanced.
🎬 Pro Tip: Move the water slightly before rolling to catch light ripples and reflections, it adds motion and realism.
⚠️ Disclaimer:
This setup is not a waterproof housing. Do not submerge your camera or allow water into the aquarium. Ensure all gear stays dry and secure. Proceed carefully, your equipment’s safety is your responsibility.
