One of my favorite demonstrations for students is that the pythagorean theorem is actually describing a geometric reality, not just blind symbolic manipulation. unfortunately, that is how it's sometimes taught.

which is strange, because until about the last 600 years, the symbolic expression of the pythagorean theorem didn't even exist. symbolic algebra is hugely helpful, but when it becomes everything we do, it can get in the way of deeper understanding.
