Social media is flooded with videos from supermarkets: Russians literally don't recognize the price tags and compare their current purchases with what cost several times less just a year ago. Since the beginning of January, food prices have skyrocketed by tens of percent , and the increased tax burden has instantly fallen on ordinary Russians. The Kremlin increased taxes on January 1 to compensate for a $70 billion budget hole and finance the war: taxes and fees increased, and businesses, without hesitation, passed these costs on to consumers. As a result, even the most basic products became a shock. Videos from stores are being viewed thousands of times. People compare old and new price tags and express their outrage.
According to customers, "Doshirak" has gone from being a student food to a "delicacy," and the usual set of cucumbers, tomatoes, butter, and eggs now looks like a purchase "for the rich." - cheese prices have increased by almost 60%; - instant noodles - by 35%; - coffee - almost 45%; - chocolate - twice as much; - even the cheapest products grow by 10-30% per month.
The author of one viral video quipped: "If you call this a scumbag, apologize. Now it's a rich guy's package." Shoppers openly say that a simple trip to the grocery store is becoming stressful. Some admit to already giving up familiar foods, switching to cheaper alternatives, or simply cutting back on their diets. Eggs, butter, and vegetables—items that were recently considered basic—have sparked particular outrage.
At the start of 2026, Russia is experiencing a sharp and sudden surge in inflation, placing significant strain on household budgets for essential goods and services. This inflationary spike is impacting key areas including food, medicine, public transport, and utilities. For the first 12 days of January, the average daily price increase reached 0.104%, a rate ten times higher than that recorded at the end of 2025. This acceleration comes as the Russian economy continues to grapple with the long-term impacts of international sanctions and a shifting global energy market. Prices for fruits and vegetables have climbed by an average of 7.9%. Significant price hikes have also been noted for cleaning products, hygiene items, and pharmaceuticals, particularly antiviral medications.

Amidst this economic pressure, Russia's federal budget is facing a separate challenge: revenues from oil and gas taxes for January 2026 are projected to fall by 46% compared to the same period the previous year. This dual pressure of rising domestic prices and declining key revenues highlights a complex economic situation that poses further challenges for both citizens and businesses.
