Plot Summary: In the fourth year of the Chui Gong era, Di Renjie serves as the inspector of Jiangnan. During a visit to Lin'an County, one of his jurisdictions, he encounters a complicated case. An old man named Meng Yunde accuses his son-in-law, Li Dayou, of murdering his daughter, Meng Xianglian, and his son, Meng Yang. In turn, Li Dayou counters that his father-in-law has hidden Meng Xianglian away with the intent of marrying her off to someone else.

The conflict arose when Meng Xianglian, after a heated argument with Li Dayou, returned to her parental home. Following her departure, Li Dayou’s mother fell ill from distress, prompting him to invite Meng Xianglian back to care for her. He visited Meng Xianglian’s home and, after much persuasion, she agreed to return. However, it was already late, so she would wait until the next day for her brother Meng Yang to escort her home. Worried about his mother’s health, Li Dayou hurried back that night.

Days passed without Meng Xianglian returning. When Li Dayou went to inquire about her, his father-in-law claimed they had already set off. With both individuals missing without a trace, Li Dayou suspected his father-in-law had hidden his wife to marry her off to another man. Meanwhile, Meng Yunde suspected that Li Dayou had killed his wife and son. The county magistrate, Zhou Congshan, was at a loss and could only seek help from Di Renjie.
