STORYLINE:
The death toll of Sri Lanka's recent floods and landslides is set to rise as many areas remain unreachable due to continuous rain, collapsed roads and unstable terrain.

The country's Disaster Management Centre reported at least 474 deaths and 336 people still missing but officials warned the real numbers may be higher.

Floodwaters continue to submerge neighbourhoods in Colombo and surrounding districts, forcing mass evacuations.

In the central highlands, relentless rainfall has triggered major landslides, burying homes and cutting off entire villages.

Rescue crews say conditions are too dangerous in several zones, halting search efforts.

The military and Air Force are conducting large-scale aerial operations, airlifting the injured, distributing dry rations and medicines, and deploying commando teams to isolated communities.

Power cuts, blocked access routes and disrupted communications continue to hinder the national response.

Authorities say it may take days—possibly weeks—to fully assess the scale of Sri Lanka’s worst weather-related disaster in recent years.
