📖 Reflections & Teachings:
A death anniversary (also known as day of death) is the yearly remembrance of a person's passing. In many cultures—including Filipino and Asian traditions—this day is honored through prayer, offering, or novenas. In the Roman Catholic faith, it is common to celebrate a Mass or offer prayers for the soul of the deceased.
Even in death, our loved ones remain part of our family and lives. If we prayed for them in life, how much more should we continue in death? Praying for the dead shows love, honor, and hope in God’s mercy. Just because they are no longer here, does not mean that they are not part of our life and need not pray for them. If we prayed for them while they were still living, much more now that they are gone. Because in reality, we do not know exactly the state of their spiritual being after death. So praying for the dead is better than not praying at all; and this is a chance to continue showing them that they are loved, cherished and honored even if they had their faults (and we all have mistakes. No one is perfect.)
“One of the best exercises of piety we can practice in this world is to offer sacrifices, alms and prayer for the dead.” — St. Augustine
“This was the reason why Judas had this sacrifice offered for the dead – so that the dead might be pardoned for their sin.” — 2 Maccabees 12:46
“The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” — James 5:16
We also invoke the intercession of saints and holy men through the Litany of the Faithful Departed, so that our petitions may be more pleasing to God.
🌱 “Every field of endeavor has unlimited possibilities.”
