Watch the incredible, fully planned landing of the legendary DC-6 "Empress of Suva" (c/n 45329, ZS-MUL) on her ferry flight to the Wonderboom Military Museum in Waterval, Wallmansthal, just north of Pretoria, South Africa!

This wasn't a crash or emergency – this was a meticulously organized event! The restoration of this magnificent aircraft began in November 2008. On December 4, 2010, the "Empress of Suva" took off from Swartkop Air Force Base at 07:13 and touched down safely on the makeshift landing strip at 07:50.

A huge shout-out to the incredible crew: pilots Johan van den Berg and Laurie Raath, both from South African Airways at the time, and Flight Engineer Mike Mayers.

The Douglas DC-6 is a piston-powered airliner and cargo aircraft built by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1946 to 1958. Originally intended as a military transport near the end of World War II, it was reworked after the war to compete with the Lockheed Constellation in the long-range commercial transport market. More than 700 were built and many still fly today in cargo, military, and wildfire control roles.
