Highland Park: LA Native Plant Source Garden | Interview with Bruce Schwartz

Under the cover of majestic coast live oaks, LA Native Plant Source Garden cultivates an ecological landscape with a hyper local approach. Aside from a few types of plants that are ‘grandfathered in,’ the planting palate in this landscape is based exclusively on what grows wild in the Verdugo Mountains and San Rafael Hills, just north of the Garden’s location. The constraints of this approach do not diminish its beauty. Wildflower meadows, mariposa and Humboldt lilies, locally native shrubs and perennials create a landscape that evokes the hills of Los Angeles as they existed long ago.
