In this video, we show the basics of cryptology (cryptology = cryptography and cryptanalysis).

This second video in a series about cryptology gives an overview of the basic terminology of cryptanalysis (focusing on classical ciphers). It explains different general types of attacks (chosen-plaintext attack, (partially) known-plaintext attack, and ciphertext-only attack). Additionally, we have a look at language models and we also break a monoalphabetic substitution cipher as well as a transposition cipher by hand.Finally, we have a look at text frequencies in CrypTool 2.

In upcoming videos we will have a look at modern ciphers as well as on modern cryptanalysis.
