Dostoyevsky said that ‘life is in ourselves and not in the external’. As human beings with free will, we have the opportunity to create in each and every moment our own personal heaven or hell. We have absolute creative freedom within ourselves which is determined by what we give our focus to, and this is at the very heart of 'Crime & Punishment'.
When Raskolnikov becomes morbidly focused, he creates his own personal hell, derailing himself and hurting those around him. He is, of course, also equally capable of acts of tremendous compassion and generosity, for thoughts and feelings that produce manifestations of great value and goodness and for the creation of relationships through his higher self that are joyful and fulfilling; his personal heaven.
