STORYLINE
About 1,000 demonstrators demanding a rerun of parliamentary elections gathered on Saturday in central Moscow for a second weekend of protests.
The comparatively small size of the crowd underlined the challenge to the opposition of keeping up public pressure on authorities.
Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the Yabloko party that staged Saturday's rally, said hundreds of appeals had been filed to protest against the vote results.
"We want to create a new system. Another one, the like of which Russia has never seen before. What kind of a system is this? We want to make everyone equal before the law in Russia," he told the rally at Bolotnaya Square, on an island in the Moscow River a few hundred metres (yards) from the Kremlin.
The liberal Yabloko party has been a bit-player in Russian politics for a long time.
Unlike many liberal parties, it was able to register for the parliament elections, but won no seats.
Demonstrations also took place in at least two other cities on Saturday but the turnout was far below the nationwide protests of a week ago when tens of thousands gathered in Moscow.
Protesters on Saturday repeated demands of last weekend's protests, calling for a repeat election, the punishment of those responsible for vote fraud and the release of political prisoners.
Nationalist leader Vladimir Tor, who also attended the protest, called on Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to resign and said the Central Electoral Commission should be dismantled.
The protests have followed national parliamentary elections on December 4, in which the ruling United Russia party lost a significant share of its seats in the State Duma, though it retained a narrow majority.
