CHT Android v1.6 Updates & Impact | Community Insights

In this session, Karim highlights the release of CHT Android v1.6 which introduced:
- Critical support for Android 15, meeting Google’s August 2025 API requirements.
- Updated OIDC authentication flows with smoother custom tab logins.

Kenya’s Ministry release pipeline combined GitHub + GitLab workflows to publish APKs, while upstream contributions were merged for global benefit. Testing was completed on devices running Android 15 and 16, ensuring stability across environments.

This upgrade protected CHT-based Android apps worldwide from Play Store removals, safeguarding access for community health workers and ministries of health.

Karim also shares insights from the contribution process—leveraging CHT Docs for environment setup, open-source PR reviews under AGPL-3.0, and the role of real device testing.
