A spokesman from China's Foreign Ministry denied rumours on
Thursday (27/4) that the country's paramount leader, Deng
Xiaoping, was near death, or had died. Chen Jian said he had been
authorised to repeat China's official line on the health of the
90-year-old leader. "For an old man in his 90s, comrade Xiaoping
is in generally good health. I have no reason whatsoever to
change this saying," Chen said. He added that he had heard no
reports that Deng's children had cancelled any planned overseas
visits.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Chen Jian, SOT (in Chinese):
"Deng Xiaoping is in good health for a man in his nineties and I
have no reason to change that statement. Regarding reports that
his family, or his children, would cancel their visit because of
the state of his health, I can tell you that I have never heard of
that."
