The communist party has been in power since 1949 when President Mao Zedong declared the creation of the People’s Republic of China.

During Mao’s leadership, there was great violence and famine resulting in 45 million deaths.

Presidential term limits were then created to prevent this sort of leadership from remaining in power.

However, in 2018, the Chinese government voted to remove Presidential term limits, meaning current President Xi Jinping can remain in power until he dies.
