About this video
There is severe ice coverage on many parts of eastern Canadian waters. A number of large winter storms, accompanied by strong winds and cold temperatures, have contributed to the rapid development of heavy, thick ice. Along some coastlines, the ice is pushed hard against the shore, making those areas extremely difficult or near impossible to navigate. Canadian Coast Guard's icebreaking crews are working hard to respond to this year's demanding ice conditions to continue to ensure the safety of mariners. CCG icebreakers are being allocated on a priority basis; passenger ferries are the first priority after distress calls or emergencies. During this period, some regularly scheduled ferry routes may be limited for icebreakers to assist commercial vessels bringing essential supplies such as heating oil, fuel and dry cargo.
