PRESS RELEASE:
TORONTO - The Canadian Hero Fund is pleased to mark the second day of
its annual 11 for 11 fundraising drive by announcing it has awarded
seven post-secondary scholarships to children of fallen Canadian Forces
personnel. Additionally, one scholarship has been awarded to the spouse
of a fallen Canadian Forces member.
These scholarships mark the Hero Fund's third year of awarding
scholarships. The scholarship program is expanding quickly, from six in
the first two years to this year's total of eight. Total disbursements
this year will exceed $40,000.
2012-2013 Hero Fund Scholarship recipients are attending the following
academic institutions:
-University of New Brunswick
-University of Saskatchewan
-Grant MacEwan University, Edmonton
-Central Training Academy, Newfoundland
The announcement comes one day after the kick-off of 11 for 11, Hero
Fund's signature annual fundraising drive. The campaign calls on
individuals, businesses and schools to raise awareness of the Fund's
scholarship program throughout the first 11 days of November by making
contributions in denominations of 11 -- such as donating $11, or
performing 11 acts of thanks. Now in its third year, the campaign has
raised more than $90,000 and has the support of prominent Canadians such
as actor Paul Gross and rock band The Trews. Last year's drive raised
more than $40,000, and Hero Fund officials expect this year's effort to
exceed that total.
"We're delighted to announce these scholarships on the heels of
launching 11 for 11. The generous contributions of Canadians from coast
to coast to coast during 11 for 11, and the rest of the year, play a
large role in Hero Fund's ability to deliver its mandate of supporting
the families of our fallen heroes," said Hero Fund Executive Director
Michael Ball.
About Canadian Hero Fund:
