Canada Post workers have launched a nationwide strike, following federal government approval for sweeping reforms to the postal service. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, or CUPW, has expressed outrage, calling the government's move an "attack." This strike comes as Ottawa has given Canada Post the green light to end door-to-door mail delivery for approximately four million addresses. Additionally, the postal service will now be permitted to shift non-urgent mail delivery from air to ground transport, a move expected to save $20 million annually. A 1994 moratorium on closing rural post offices is also being lifted, impacting nearly 4,000 locations. The government argues these significant changes are crucial for the financial viability of Canada Post, which is projected to face substantial losses. Minister Joël Lightbound stated that Canada Post is "effectively insolvent" and that repeated government bailouts are not sustainable, asserting these reforms are necessary to "save Canada Post."
