About this video
The k-nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithm is a simple, yet powerful, machine learning technique used for both classification and regression tasks. It is a type of instance-based or lazy learning algorithm, where the function is only approximated locally, and all computation is deferred until classification.
How KNN Works:
Choose the number of neighbors (k): The algorithm requires you to specify how many neighbors you want to consider when making a prediction. The choice of k can significantly impact the performance of the algorithm.
Calculate the distance: For a new data point, the algorithm computes its distance from all the other training data points. The distance can be Euclidean, Manhattan, or any other suitable metric.
Find the nearest neighbors: The algorithm identifies the k nearest neighbors, i.e., the k training points that are closest to the new data point.
Make predictions:
For classification: The algorithm assigns the new data point to the class most common among its k nearest neighbors.
For regression: The algorithm predicts the value for the new data point as the average (or sometimes the median) of the values of its k nearest neighbors.
Advantages of KNN:
Simple and easy to implement.
No assumptions about the data distribution.
Can be used for both classification and regression tasks.
Disadvantages of KNN:
Sensitive to the scale of the data and irrelevant features.
Computationally intensive, especially as the dataset size grows.
Requires careful selection of the number of neighbors (k).
Applications of KNN:
Recommender systems (e.g., suggesting similar products or movies).
Image recognition and classification.
Anomaly detection in network traffic.
