About this video
CRAM stands for Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar – and it is one of the most advanced and impressive air defense systems of the US Armed Forces.
But how is it so effective?
CRAM tracks and destroys missiles, rockets, artillery, low flying aircraft, and any other enemy threat that has penetrated other defense systems before they can hit their targets. This defense system is rapidly deployable as it is mounted on a trailer and it provides very reliable day and nigh protection, knocking out 70-80% of rockets.
CRAM accomplishes this through a perfect combination of cutting-edge sensors, a thermal imaging system, and of course a Vulcan Gatling gun capable of firing its 20mm high-explosive incendiary ammunition at an incredible 4,500 rounds per minute.
And CRAM’s massive rate of fire isn’t cheap. It costs about $40,000 per rocket destroyed and that’s on top of the 10 to $15 million price tag for each CRAM unit
