BYD Sealion 5 DM-i vs Honda HR-V vs Toyota Corolla Cross 🚗

Last month was more than a bit cold and rainy, but the competition in the electrified subcompact-crossover segment has been getting hotter, so not even a storm could put a damper on this Big Test production.

We have one Chinese model going up against two Japanese offerings: The BYD Sealion 5 DM-i, billed as a range-extended electric vehicle and not a hybrid, versus the top-spec Honda HR-V RS e:HEV and the Toyota Corolla Cross GR-S HEV. You may remember that in a similar Big Test two years ago, the Corolla Cross came out on top, but since then, the HR-V has gained a hybrid powertrain while BYD has gained a foothold in the local market.

The two Japanese subcompact crossovers may be the more established nameplates here, but the Sealion 5 DM-i makes you an offer you’ll find hard to refuse: an asking price of P1.248 million, but at the moment, it’s available at an introductory price of P1.198 million. The HR-V RS e:HEV goes well over that at P1.799 million, and the Corolla Cross GR-S HEV is the most expensive at P1.943 million (or P1.948 million if you opt for this red paint job).
