This time we have the pleasure of hosting Dr. Thomas Pöppelmann (Principal Engineer at Infineon Technologies AG). He will present an approach that aims to replace commonly used cryptography algorithms by post-quantum cryptography (PQC) based security protocols and out of practice an implementation of a quantum-safe security protocol.
PRESENTATION:
Due to their computing power, quantum computers may have the disruptive potential to break various currently used encryption and authentication algorithms, like RSA and ECC, in the near future. An approach that aims to replace RSA and ECC in next generation security protocols is post-quantum cryptography (PQC). In this talk, we briefly discuss the status of the efforts to develop and standardize new PQC algorithms. In addition, we present a case study, in which we implemented a quantum-safe security protocol for authenticated key establishment (AKE) on an Aurix automotive microcontroller. To show the impact of a transition to PQC algorithms, we provide a breakdown of cycle cost and communication overhead.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Thomas Pöppelmann received his PhD from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany focusing on the topic of post-quantum cryptography (PQC). In 2015, Thomas started his career in Infineon working in the field of concepts for security microcontrollers. He has published a number of academic papers and co-developed the "New Hope" approach for PQC. For "New Hope" he and his co-researchers received the 2016 Internet Defense Prize from Usenix and Facebook.
